[Macintosh System Software for File Translation Management]
Macintosh Easy Open, an extension to System 7 incorporating the Translation Manager application programming interface, extends the Macintosh architecture to provide implicit file translation when opening a document via double click or drop launch. Designed to simplify access to information, Macintosh Easy Open makes translating documents as easy as any other basic Macintosh task. Macintosh Easy Open doesn't perform the translation itself, but provides an effective, system-level method for managing access to third-party translation systems and applications, which perform the actual file translation for the user.
Macintosh Easy Open works by polling applications and compatible translation systems to determine the types of documents those programs are capable of opening, with or without the use of special translators. While Macintosh applications are capable of opening a wide variety of document types, a user must often launch the application first before determining if an application can open a document.
With Macintosh Easy Open, users are presented with several options for opening a document that normally couldn't be opened just by double-clicking on the document’s icon. This is a much simpler and straight-forward approach to opening such documents. Once a user selects an alternate application, Macintosh Easy Open transparently manages converting the document using the application's internal translation capabilities or by using specialized third-party translation software.
Customer Benefits
• Automatic translation of documents opened via double-click or drop-launch provides many more options for opening documents.
• Batch translation with the Document Converter allows entire folders to be converted to an alternate format in one simple step by dragging and dropping those files onto a pre-set Document Converter icon.
• Enhanced kind fields and 16x16 color icons make it easier to identify document types at the Finder level and from Open and Save As windows.
•Applications need not be revised or updated to take advantage of most Macintosh Easy Open features.
